Bayern Munich coach, Hansi Flick, revealed to the public that the German giants were interested in three Chelsea superstars but were unable to secure any of them. The three stars in question are, of course, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Timo Werner, and Kai Havertz. The Bavarians were linked with all of these players for a long time and it is quite fascinating how Frank Lampard managed to steal the two German signings from Flick. However, the Munich boss is happy with his team and also talked about the player they did manage to get.
Hudson-Odoi was the first Chelsea player that the German giants targeted. He was bursting into the scene and was not getting enough game time in London. Bayern tried to rescue him but the Blues would not let him go. The Germans tried again in the 2020 summer transfer window but Lampard was stubborn and rightfully so. They offered up to 35 million pounds for the winger/wing-back back in 2019 but their bids were denied. The Reds tried one last time through a loan request but alas the Blues were not ready to let Callum go and later pinned him to the club till 2024 with a new contract.
Bayern coach reveals that the club wanted three Chelsea superstars.
The Chelsea youngster was not the only one they wanted however, two of the Blues’ latest signings were desired by the Munich side. Timo Werner and Kai Havertz were two of the biggest names in German football and every big side wanted to secure the two young players. However, Lampard was once again able to convince them to join Chelsea instead and with Roman Abramovich backing the Chelsea legend, Lampard secured them both.
In an interview with Sky Deutschland, the Bayern manager revealed their plans to acquire the players and how they had to settle for a completely different player instead. They failed to bring in any of their three main targets but managed to sneak away with a very vital player from Manchester City. Flick said in the interview,
It is always said that Hudson-Odoi and [Serginho] Dest were my desired players, but they were our desired players.”
“We decided that we wanted to add players for the wide areas and that is what we did. Havertz, Werner and Sane were mentioned, I would have loved to have all three, but we all decided on Sane. He’s a player who makes a difference.” -Source Goal
Havertz and Werner cost the West London side approximately 120 million euros however, they are yet to live up to those price tags. Both of the players are having a difficult time settling into the new club and the physical nature of the Premier League is a big culture shock for them. The arrival of German coach, Thomas Tuchel, has helped them a bit but they are yet to show their true potential to the Chelsea fans.
