Arsenal were absolutely dismantled last night in their own backyard against an inconsistent Liverpool side. The defending champions were the favorites going into the game but due to their lack of consistency and the number of injuries, people expected the Gunners to put up a good fight and maybe even pull off a win. However, this was not the case and the Merseyside team ran riots at the Emirates Stadium and won the game comfortably.
Arsenal manager shocked by his team’s performance against Liverpool.
Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, was shocked after the 3-0 defeat which left the club at 9th position, not even in a Europa League qualification spot. This is a new low for the former invincibles and one must ask how much longer Arteta can survive in the hot seat. The manager was visibly disappointed by his team’s effort after the match and asked his players to stand up for the crest that they wear. He told Sky Sports after the match,
We completely deserved to lose the game. They were better in every department and deserved to win the game with the margin they had, or even more. I accept responsibility for the way we played today.”
“I don’t have to use any excuses – that we don’t have five or six players – the standards are much higher at this football club and I have to get them to perform at that level. It was technical as well. We gave every ball away and could not put three passes together. The basics weren’t there today.”
“At the moment I am in shock. I didn’t expect that because of the way the team trained.”-Source Goal
Arsenal are a team who should be fighting for the Premier League every season however, they look nowhere near as good as the teams in the top four. They need to get back their passion for the club and stand up for the fans of the club who deserve much better. Arteta then continued to apologize to the fans saying that the whole team was remorseful for the recent performances.
The team now has just the Europa League to look forward to where they face Salvia Praha in the quarter-finals. The Gunners have been playing the Europa League for three seasons now and this has to be the season where they will win. Arteta asked his players to do better on Thursday against Slavia but whether they will be able to do so or not is up to them. We must wait and see if the players can reflect upon the defeat and make a swift response in the Europa League.
