Tammy Abraham remains a top scorer for Chelsea this season yet he is never selected by Thomas Tuchel to start for the team. This is quite an absurd situation for the striker as by stats he is still the best scorer in the team however he has fallen down the pecking order quite a bit. Tuchel prefers to play Timo Werner ahead of the English striker and he has even been experimenting with Kai Havertz in a false nine position which puts Abraham in further trouble. Tuchel finally opened up about the striker’s situation and gave an explanation as to why he has not been selected lately.
Chelsea boss explains why Tammy Abraham is not selected.
In a pre-match interview against Crystal Palace, the Blues’ boss talked about the struggling striker and gave us some insight into the team. The main argument that the former Paris Saint-Germain boss put forward was that the team has been getting a lot of results without the striker and also that whenever Tammy is used, he fails to impact the game in a significant way. He told reporters,
“Tammy has had a bit of a rough time, he started twice or three times and was twice substituted for tactical reasons at half-time. He could not have the impact he demands from himself and we wish from him.”
“The squad has played very well without him, we’ve had a lot of results without him. Now we’re in the decisive part of the season where it’s not so easy to bring players who are injured into the shape.” – Source Goal
The striker was left out once again in the Crystal Palace game as well which the Blues went on to win 4-1 in a comfortable fashion. Havertz was chosen to play as a false nine and he did quite well in the position, even managing to get himself a goal although in all fairness he should have had two goals. This just puts further pressure on the Chelsea academy graduate who might start to believe that there is no spot for him in the team.
Werner is also selected in front of him as even though the German is going through a bad phase goal-wise, he is always putting in a hundred percent effort and has a huge work rate. He also has 11 assists in all competitions along with 10 goals which shows us that he is still involved in a lot of goals even if he is not the one scoring them.
Tammy is a good striker but maybe he should look for a loan move away to find his clinical finishing again. He performed quite well under Frank Lampard so there is no reason why he should be facing such a slump. A loan move would do wonders for his confidence and it is better than sitting on the benches week in and week out.
