In the press conference which took place on Monday, Zidane made it clear that he does not want anything to do with the Super League. A week ago the Spanish Club was doing everything to get the breakaway competition to happen, and attempting to persuade everybody that it was a smart thought. Zidane seemed focused on their Champions League clash with the London side.
“What we have to do is to compete and to only think about playing soccer. That’s it”, Zidane said on Monday.
“If we started to think about everything that is being said..it would make it worse. We can only think about the match. The referee will do his job. We have to compete as always. We can’t control the rest, so can’t think about it.”
The Real Madrid president was one of the orchestrators of the new Super League which was meant to replace the Champions League. Chelsea was among the founding members of the new League but withdrew immediately along with the other English clubs after Super League was censured.
Chelsea manager Tuchel said that the Champions League match against Madrid would be unaffected by the administrative frolics of the owners.
“I do not imagine that there is any advantage or disadvantage because of a sports political discussion,” Tuchel said. “ I don’t even want to think about it, because it does not exist in my eyes.”
UEFA was totally against the Super League and even threatened to punish those involved. But Florentino Perez, the Real Madrid president still believes that the new competition will happen in due course and will stabilize the clubs financially.
Both managers looked pretty confident on Monday. Chelsea have been on deafening structure ever since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel’s side are back in the top 4 race which looked pretty uncertain at the start of the season.
On the other hand, Zidane’s side were held when they drew 0-0 at home to Real Betis on Saturday. They are sitting at second in the La Liga table with a deficit of 2 points from the top of the table.
Real Madrid goes into the Champions League first leg of the semi-finals against Chelsea without their captain Sergio Ramos (calf injury). The other players who will be unavailable for the side are Ferland Mendy (calf injury), Frederico Valverde (coronavirus infection), Lucas Vasquez (knee injury).
On the other hand, Chelsea have only one concern over Mateo Kovacic due to a thigh injury.
